The Home office has informed the council that it will no longer be using Hillside Place in Farnborough for the dispersal of asylum seekers. Once the lease expires, the current residents of the site will be rehomed and their welfare and accommodation will continue to be provided by the Home Office.
Speaking about the decision, Rushmoor Council Leader, ClIr Gareth Williams says: "Today's decision by the Home Office is a testament to the strong case put forward by Rushmoor Borough Council and Alex Baker MP. By ending the lease, the Home Office has recognised that the use of Hillside Place did not represent good value for taxpayers and the current residents will be better accommodated elsewhere.
“Rushmoor has always been a Borough that welcomes those in need, and we remain dedicated to providing shelter for those fleeing violence and persecution. At the same time, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every resident has access to decent homes. Our community deserves nothing less.
“It isn’t always possible to discuss sensitive negotiations with Government agencies in public but rest assured that Rushmoor Council is working tirelessly to deliver what is best for local people.”
