Rushmoor Borough Council is to consider the government’s proposed benefit reforms and how it can best support local people who may be affected by them.
The work has been commissioned by the Leader, Councillor Gareth Williams, in response to the government’s consultation document published this week, Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working.
Councillor Williams said: “The council supports the goals of helping people into employment and delivering a fair and trusted system of benefits. We are also committed to making sure the voices of our residents are heard on the very significant changes proposed in this report.
“I have therefore asked Councillor Jules Crossley, our Cabinet member for Policy, Performance and Sustainability, to develop a response in consultation with councillors and residents, including assessing the potential impact of the proposed changes, and how residents affected by them can be supported.
“We will make sure that there are opportunities for all residents, who may be affected by the proposed reforms, to have their say.”
Residents can also reply to the government’s consultation individually on its website or write to the local MP, Alex Baker, to give their views or raise any concerns.
The closing date on the consultation is 30 June.
