Rushmoor Borough Council is holding a Men’s Health Day on Saturday, 18 January in Farnborough – with loads of great, free activities.
The event in Princes Mead runs from 10am to 3pm and will feature over 20 organisations focussing on men's health and sporting activities, as well as offering free drop-in health checks.
The variety of activities and sports on offer include football, karate, cycling and tennis. There will be stalls promoting prostate and bowel cancer awareness, weight management and help with giving up smoking and Rushmoor Healthy Living will be on hand to provide valuable advice. There will also be a chance to explore the support available for those struggling with mental health issues.
Visitors will be able to meet some of Farnborough FC men and women’s team and get some free match day tickets (including the men’s later that day and the women’s team on Sunday).
Members of the Hampshire and Surrey Hills Men’s Choir will also be tunefully demonstrating the benefits of singing for health!
Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Communities and Residents, Councillor Sophie Porter, said: “Our new priorities have identified that the health and wellbeing of residents is important, so we want to build healthier and stronger communities by improving access and awareness of mental health support, increase opportunities for physical exercise and address health inequalities. We have organised this event to raise awareness and to showcase the opportunities for physical and mental health in our borough.”
According to the NHS, men in England have increasing rates of serious health conditions such as cancers, heart disease, and type two diabetes, with increased rates of smoking and heavy drinking. Statistics also show that men represent four out of five suicide cases, highlighting their vulnerability to mental health issues.
Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Development and Economic Growth, Councillor Keith Dibble, said: "It’s really important that all of us begin to take men’s health seriously. Events like this, which allow men to get themselves checked out and encourage them to get involved in physical activities are so important and give them a real opportunity speak to lots of different health and fitness specialists all in one place. I know I will be dropping in to learn some things and pick up some tips.
”Hopefully for some men it will be an important starting point for them to change their lives around and begin making the right lifestyle choices.”
