Plans for a new Rushmoor beacon in Manor Park, Aldershot, which will be lit for the first time at the planned VE Day commemorations in May, were approved by Rushmoor Borough Councillors last night (Wednesday 12 February).

Beacon designThe beacon will be 4m tall, with an additional 1m brazier at the top, and it will be placed on a 3m square concrete base, protected by 2m high railings. The beacon, which will be black, and will feature the Rushmoor crest, will be installed towards the top of Manor Park, close to The Manor House.

It is intended that the beacon will become a powerful symbol of unity and connection for the local community, which will honour the heritage and long-standing connection with the British Army in Aldershot and create a lasting landmark for future generations.

Members of the development management committee approved a planning application for the beacon, which will be funded by the government’s community recovery fund, on the basis that it will create a shared space for residents to connect, promote inclusivity and togetherness and highlight that local events and initiatives strengthen our community.

The beacon will be lit during public events to mark the upcoming 80-year anniversary of VE Day - the anniversary of the end of the war in Europe - on May 8, and will also be available for civic events.

Rushmoor Borough Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Sophie Porter, said: “We are proud to be building a beacon, which will serve as a focal point for bringing our communities together.

“The Rushmoor Beacon is a fantastic initiative that embodies the values of unity, heritage, and community. Rushmoor’s identity is built on strength, service, and innovation, reflected in our Coat of Arms. The crossed swords symbolise our close ties with the Army, while the Astral Crown and key represent our aviation and technological heritage. The Hampshire Rose reminds us of our place within the wider county, and the lions from the historic boroughs of Aldershot and Farnborough stand proudly as symbols of resilience and unity. Our motto, ‘Strength in Unity,’ is at the heart of this initiative, reinforcing our commitment to bringing communities together.

“As a military town, we have a deep-rooted connection to the Armed Forces, and this beacon will serve as a lasting tribute to that history while also creating a space for all residents to come together.

“Thanks to funding from the community recovery fund, this landmark will not only commemorate significant events such as VE Day 80 but also provide a focal point for civic gatherings and local celebrations. It represents our ongoing commitment to inclusivity, strengthening our neighbourhoods, and ensuring that every resident feels a sense of belonging in Rushmoor.

“We look forward to seeing this beacon shine as a symbol of our shared purpose and community spirit for generations to come."

Other commemmorations planned to mark this historic anniversary of VE Day include the raising of a VE flag, the ringing of church bells and the lighting of Beacons or ‘Lamp Lights of Peace’ in the evening.
