VE Day 80

Start date and time: Thursday 08 May 8:45 PM
End date and time: Thursday 08 May 10:00 PM

Location: Manor Park, Aldershot

Cost: Free

A special evening to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Everyone is invited to our free open-air community event, which gets under way at 8.45pm in Manor Park, Aldershot.

There will be arrival music from 8.30pm before the event officially opens at 8.45 pm, with the lighting of our new beacon following at 9.30pm, along with many others across the UK, symbolising the "light of peace" that emerged from the darkness of war.

In the lead up to the beacon lighting, there will be music from Cove Brass, a short talk from local historian Paul Vickers and other readings, and music from a piper.

The event has been organised by the council with support from the Military Events Enhancement Group, a group that includes representatives from the local community and organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Shots Foundation and the Garrison Community Team. The aim of the group is to increase collaboration and community participation in military-themed community events, and to support community integration.

Visitors are encouraged to bring torches, as it will be dark by the time the event ends.

National events

Our event is one of hundreds taking place as the nation comes together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth. VE Day Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will be lit at the same time across the country.
